First Time on a Golf Simulator? What to Expect at Albatross in Hamilton

Never played on a golf simulator before? You’re not alone. A lot of the people who walk into Albatross for the first time have never swung at a screen, and plenty have never swung a club at all. Here’s what a first visit looks like, so you can show up relaxed instead of guessing.

How Indoor Golf Works

You hit a real golf ball off a mat into a large impact screen. Cameras and sensors above and in front of you read the ball and the club the instant you make contact: speed, launch angle, spin and direction. Then the simulator flies the shot onto the course on screen, and you play your next one from wherever it lands.

At Albatross every bay runs Golfzon, one of the most advanced simulator systems in the world. A few things make it friendlier than people expect:

  • Auto-tee. The ball tees itself up after every shot, so there’s no bending over or chasing balls.
  • A moving swing plate. The floor tilts to match the slope of your lie, so an uphill shot actually feels uphill.
  • Fairway, rough and bunker surfaces. You hit from a different mat depending on where your ball ends up.
  • 300+ courses. Pebble Beach, St Andrews, Bethpage Black, and local favourites like Deer Ridge in Kitchener. You can see the full course list before you come.

You don’t need to know any of the tech. Staff will get your bay set up, and the touchscreen walks you through picking a course and entering your players.

What It Costs

The biggest surprise for most first-timers: you pay per bay, per hour, not per person. Split between a group of friends, it’s usually cheaper than people expect.

Current hourly bay rates range from $40 to $95, depending on the simulator model and the time of day. The full breakdown is on our rates page. A few ways to pay less:

  • Early Bird: reduced rates Monday to Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Seniors: guests 60+ get 15% off Monday to Thursday, 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Sunday Funday: reduced rates from 5 PM to close on Sundays.

How Many People Can Play

Each bay holds up to four guests in Ancaster and up to six in Stoney Creek. If you’re bringing a bigger group, book more than one bay. In our VIP rooms, the walls can open up to turn neighbouring bays into one big party room.

How Long to Book

Pace depends on how many people are in your bay and how often everyone is hitting. On a first visit, don’t try to squeeze in 18 holes. Book a comfortable block, play nine, and spend the rest of your time on the driving range mode or a closest-to-the-pin game. You can always come back for the full round.

Two tips that help any group keep moving:

  • Turn on gimmes for short putts. The simulator can concede putts inside a set distance, which saves a lot of time for beginners.
  • Have the next player ready while the current shot is flying. With auto-tee there’s very little downtime between swings.

What to Bring and Wear

  • Clubs. If you have your own, bring them. If you don’t, ask when you book.
  • Shoes. Clean, flat-soled shoes are your best bet. Leave metal spikes at home.
  • Clothes. Whatever you’re comfortable swinging in. There’s no dress code to worry about.
  • Your appetite. Both locations serve food and drinks, so you don’t need to plan dinner somewhere else. Check out the menus.

Never Played Golf at All?

That’s completely fine. The simulator doesn’t care if your swing is pretty, and nobody is waiting behind you on the next tee. Lots of groups come in having never held a club and just play a scramble, where everyone hits and you play the best ball.

If you’d like a head start, our Shanks & Thanks Beginner Golf Clinic teaches the basics with a CGTF professional and then puts them to work on the simulator. It runs November 13 in Ancaster and November 27 in Stoney Creek. Details and sign-up are on the events page. For one-on-one help, see indoor golf lessons.

If You Already Golf

The simulator is just as useful for keeping your game sharp over the winter. Practice mode gives you club and ball data on every swing, and you can replay your swing on camera. If you want regular competition, our leagues run through the indoor season, including the AGL Scramble Series, a two-person team league starting November 18.

Ancaster or Stoney Creek?

Both locations offer the same Golfzon experience, food and drinks:

  • Ancaster, 105 Portia Dr: up to 4 players per bay.
  • Stoney Creek, 410 Lewis Rd #101: up to 6 players per bay, plus billiards and racing simulators under the same roof.

Current hours for both locations are on our locations page.

FAQ

How does pricing work?

We charge per hour per bay only. We do not charge per person. You can have up to 4 people at the same bay in Ancaster and up to 6 people at the same bay in Stoney Creek, and pay the same hourly rate.

Do I need a credit card to book if I have a gift card or voucher?

Yes. A valid credit card is still required to secure your booking. Bring your physical gift card or voucher with you to your reservation. Our team will apply the balance to your bill in-house at the end of your visit.

What makes our golf simulators different?

Our GolfZon simulators offer one of the most advanced indoor golf experiences in the world, with features designed to make every round feel like the real thing:

  • Automatic Ball Teeing – No bending or chasing balls; the system tees it up for you every time.
  • Tilting Swing Plate – The hitting platform lifts and tilts to recreate uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies.
  • Short Game Realism – From chips and putts to flop shots, Golfzon’s short game play is as true-to-life as it gets.
  • Unmatched Accuracy – Overhead high-speed cameras capture club and ball data with incredible precision, including ball speed, spin, carry, and trajectory.
  • 300+ Courses Worldwide – Play on some of the best courses from around the globe, all in stunning detail.
What is the VIP Bay?

Our VIP Bay is a private, premium simulator space designed for an elevated golf experience. It features a Golfzon simulator with all the same advanced technology—moving swing plate, auto-tee, and world-class courses—but in a larger, enclosed room with extra seating and comfort. It’s perfect for private groups, corporate events, celebrations, or anyone looking for a little more space and exclusivity while they play.

Does the floor really move?

Yes, it does! The Golfzon hydraulic swing plate lifts and tilts to recreate uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies for a truly realistic challenge. You’ll also find different hitting surfaces—fairway, rough, and sand—to match your shot. And no shortcuts: the system knows where the ball is and will apply a distance penalty if you hit from the wrong area.

How many players can use one bay?

Each simulator bay can comfortably accommodate up to 4 players in Ancaster and up to 6 players in Stoney Creek. It’s ideal for solo practice sessions, friendly games, or group events like leagues and parties.

How long does it take to play 18 holes?

A single player can complete 18 holes in about 1 hour. Groups of 4 usually take around 3 – 4 hours, depending on the pace of play.

Do I need to bring my own golf clubs and balls?

We recommend bringing your own clubs for the most authentic experience, but we also have rental sets available if needed. Golfzon simulators are designed to work with all standard clubs. As for balls, you don’t need to bring any—our simulators use high-quality balls specifically designed for accurate play and tracking.

Is there an app to track my stats?

Yes! The free Golfzon app (available on Google Play and the App Store) records all your rounds and keeps track of your stats once you create a profile. You’ll be able to see your average driving distance, fairway and green percentages, and average putts per round. After a few games, the app even calculates your handicap—perfect for use in our leagues and tournaments.

Where is the racing simulator located?

Our racing simulator is exclusively available at our Stoney Creek location at Albatross Indoor Golf.
